My Philosophy

“Feeling good begins with looking good.”

Beauty is subjective; it is in the eye of the beholder. This is true, but beauty also comes from inside. We all have the potential to glow if we feel good about ourselves, and to me, make-up is the perfect tool to enhance that glow or draw it out.

As an actress, I can’t tell you how many times smoky eyes or vibrant red lips helped me create a character within myself. Sometimes spending a little extra time in front of the mirror – putting on a favorite lip gloss or fluffing up my hair – can boost my confidence or lighten my mood. Make-up doesn’t make us who we are, but it can make us feel stronger and more in control. Simply put, it can transform us, and that’s a powerful gift!

As an artist, it is my responsibility to listen to each client, interpret their expectations and help them transform. Sometimes they want to look and feel totally different (and that’s a liberating experience) but sometimes they just want to find a fresher, more polished version of themselves. Either way, I use all of my skills to help them achieve what they desire because… Feeling good begins with looking good.

After years in the modeling industry, I learned more than a few tips and tricks, and now, my knowledge is your advantage! I utilize my background to give you an edge. About Me
Right now, I’m a model, an actress and an activist, but once upon a time, I was just another girl in Bloomfield, Michigan, studying to become a make-up artist. Then I got discovered by a scout, and before I knew it, I was swept into the versatile world (and life!) of modeling. My dream of becoming a make-up and skin care expert got tucked away in the back of my mind as my career in front of the camera, literally, took me places I never thought I’d go.

After arriving in New York City, I scored editorials in some of the world’s most prestigious women’s magazines such as Vogue Italia, Mademoiselle, Glamour and Marie Claire. It was amazing and surreal to see myself on those glossy pages but behind-the-scenes was just as fascinating. I had the great pleasure of working with renowned make-up artists like Bobbi Brown, Sonia Kashuk and Pat McGrath. I watched them and I listened and I learned.

Then I found my face smiling back at me from the magazine covers of Self, New Woman, Brides and Health. My career in print work was so successful that I nabbed exclusive contracts with L’Oreal Skin Care, Wonderbra, FreshLook and Oil of Olay. I also kept picking up new techniques and adapting them into my personal beauty regime, and I remembered that little butterfly of a dream still fluttering in its jar, still waiting for me to become the one with the brush and the know-how.

Suddenly, the acting bug bit me, and I began working really hard to branch out into the dynamic and exciting world of acting. Much to my delight, I caught a big break when I landed the contract role of Ava Peralta on CBS’s Guiding Light. I spent over three years playing Ava in drama after drama (it was a soap, after all) and it was great! I kept modeling, too, but pursuing more acting gigs was a no-brainer. So, I landed a guest spot on Law & Order SVU and a couple of fun film roles in Wedding Daze, Salt and the horror flickĀ Inkubus.

Throughout the whirlwind years of acting and modeling, I kept observing, taking notes and absorbing all the little secrets of make-up artists working on me. Sometimes I even helped develop my style and look for the camera. Consulting came next, as it was bound to happen, and I found myself repeatedly asked by friends and family how to achieve the flawless results spotted on the red carpet and glimpsed in all the magazines. They knew that if anyone would know, it was me; and they were right! I realized then that it was time to, finally, realize my long ago dream.

And now, here I am. I’ve launched Ethereal Beauty by Michelle Ray Smith to give everyone the full benefit of my years and years of professional experience and expertise. I work one-on-one with clients to help them achieve an ethereal, a beautiful, a perfect look for the special occasions in their lives. Feeling good begins with looking good and that’s where I come in!
